EULA Clarification – Donator Ranks

Following up the new End User License Agreement announcement, Mojang has hosted a Question and Answer session to further clarify a lot of rules regarding server monetization. The verdict is in: Cubeville’s ranks will no longer be allowed as donation rewards.

Fear not! This does not mean that the special features which make Cubeville so grand are going away! All users who donated before August 1st, 2014 will keep their ranks as they are. Mojang has specifically stated that anything available to one player must be made available to all players, but have qualified their statement by allowing servers to offer their previous ranks via “soft currency”. Soft currency refers to things like Cubeville’s cubes, spleef rewards, pvp rewards, and any other non-tangible transaction regarding the way a server works. To put it simply, a soft currency is a way to earn donator ranks without giving a server any real money.

Cubeville will begin offering its players Player Ranks on August 1st. These ranks will be earned by players for simply playing or competing on our server. We will need to discuss further which types of events will constitute an earned rank and will set forth a rule-set to determine how players can earn them. Bottom line: players will no longer donate for Player Ranks, but they will still be able to earn them. I will confirm at this time that Spleef rewards will, under some circumstances, include donator ranks.

Previous donators will be treated as though they had won these rewards in-game and will keep them.

As per the wording of the EULA and the clarification, Cubeville will have until August 1st, 2014 to fully comply with the new End User License Agreement. We are allowed to accept donations for ranks until that time. In the next few weeks, I will set a formal date to cease accepting donations for ranks. After August 1st, donations will be made purely to support Cubeville and will not unlock any access to Cubeville’s ranks. At such a time, Donator Ranks will become Player Ranks and will be earned purely in-game.

Cubeville has always managed to sustain itself, and it always will. We’re not going away, ever!
Forever and always, happy mining!

Minecraft EULA News

The End User License Agreement, and the way Mojang enforces it, have been clarified for multiplayer servers like us. The most important news regarding the EULA is that, for the most part, we agree with it. Cubeville plans to comply fully with the enforcement of Minecraft’s EULA so that we can continue to be your favorite server.

Cubeville’s rank systems will be undergoing a few changes over the next few weeks regarding donations and server monetization. The selling of in-game currency was requested by a longterm member of the server three years ago. As Mojang begins to enforce and clarify their EULA, in-game currencies may no longer be bought with real-world money. We will not being attempting a workaround for this. Buying cubes is gone.
Some of our ranks fall into a legal gray-area in terms of the EULA. Cubeville will begin working to clarify which of our ranks are allowed to remain and which may no longer be offered as donation perks. This will not be retroactive and will not limit the abilities of anyone who has previously earned a rank or anyone who has donated and received a rank as a reward. To put it clearly: if you have a rank now, you will always have that rank.

Cubeville is thankful for Mojang’s clarification of the Minecraft EULA, and we greatly appreciate their understanding of the costs of maintaining a server. Many servers are going to begin disappearing from the Minecraft community due to these changes. We do not plan to be one of those servers. We look forward to continuing to shape the future of Minecraft multiplayer and seeing Minecraft’s community grow and expand. To the servers who are deciding that Minecraft is no longer a home for you,
“Thank you for helping us grow this community. We promise to look after your players and wish you well in your future endeavors.”

Happy Mining, Cubeville!
